• Adapted to dry or moist pastures, roadsides, and waste areas.
• Prefers sandy soils.
• Is readily grazed by livestock in the spring and early summer.
• On heavily grazed areas, deer will dig up and eat the basal part of the stem during winter months.
• Adds variety to livestock diet, but is seldom abundant enough to be a key management species.
• Provides nesting cover for some game birds.
