• Other common names include “Devil’s head” and “Devil’s pinchushion.”
• This cactus is round-shaped and grows very low to the ground.
• Flowers in May to June, and has edible red berries as fruit.
• Plant is approximately 12 inches in diameter and grows 2 to 6 inches in height.
• It is a very hardy cactus, that grows hidden in the grass.
• The name, “Horse Crippler,” is due to horses not seeing the plant and stepping on it; the thorns would penetrate the bottom of the hoof and cripple the animal.
