• Occurs in nearly pure stands on alkaline or saline soils in valleys and meadows, sandy soils of desert foothills or roadsides, also dry and gravelly slopes
• Most abundant on moderately-moist alkaline soils of bottomlands where other species are not adapted.
• Withstands flooding well.

• Seeds remain viable for many years
